Historical Context


- Malcolm X (1965) & MLK assassinated (1968)
o This was a major blow to black civil rights activists.
o Many blacks and whites were feeling betrayed at that point since they just acquired civil rights and then their leaders are assassinated.
- Black protests
o many blacks were faced with many problems that were not solved even after they gained civil rights
§ unsatisfactory housing, unemployment, policy prejudice, violence against them, bad health care, and education
o During this time, many race riots took place due to violence started by police officers against black people
§ Watts Riots (1965): one of the most well known American race riots that ever took place
· More than 34 people died
§ Detroit Riots (1967): Police raided an illegal after-hours club
· More than 40 people died in the course of 5 days

- One of the founders of the Black Panther Party, along with Huey P. Newton
- Supporter of Black Power
- Helped form our party into a nationwide and global movement
- Influenced by Malcolm X: “Self-defense is an act of intelligence” (CNN)
o Self-defense would help Black people
